Summary: Amos McGee was an employee at the zoo. He loved the fact that part of his job was to sit and play with the animals. When Amos McGee does not show up to the zoo to play with his friends, they know something is wrong. So they decided to find out what was wrong with Amos.
Personal response: This book sends such a positive message that I think everyone can relate to. I love the fact that the animals leave the zoo, take the bus, and come to see why Mr. McGee was not at the zoo today. Even better is that the animals stay the night! My favorite drawing is the one of all the animals waiting for the bus!
Classroom connections: While reading this story to the students, I would stop and discuss the fact that Mr. McGee loves his job and the animals look forward to him playing with them every day. I would ask students how takes care of them when they are sick? Also, if they feel better when someone is there to comfort them and help them to feel better. The illustrator does such a great job of drawing Amos and the animals it almost feels like they are in the same room as you are.
